Invoicing for plumbers and electricians in Mauritius: know which jobs are paid
Plumbers and electricians in Mauritius: turn quotes into job cards, invoices and receipts, and see who still owes you. Try Envoice.mu free for 14 days.
Imagine it's a Thursday evening in Curepipe and the rain has finally stopped. Since seven this morning you've fixed a burst pipe in Forest Side, replaced a water heater element in Floréal and chased a tripping breaker at a restaurant that wanted it sorted before dinner service. Three jobs, and each one got paid differently: one client sent Rs 2,500 by Juice, one said he'd settle at the end of the month, and the restaurant manager wants a proper invoice in the company's name before anyone pays anything. On the dashboard of the van there's a notebook full of numbers, none of them totalled.
Invoice Blindness, trade edition
There's a name for this: Invoice Blindness. The work is done and some of it is billed, but standing next to the van right now, you couldn't say what has actually been paid and who still owes you.
For plumbers and electricians it rarely comes from bad clients. Most people pay once they get a clear invoice and a polite reminder. It comes from the scatter. The quote went out on WhatsApp and now sits under 300 newer messages; the Juice screenshot is in your gallery between photos of a fuse board, and the receipt for the parts you picked up on the way is somewhere in the glovebox. Each job lives in four places at once, so nobody, you included, sees the whole of it.
How one job runs in Envoice
Envoice keeps each job as one record, from the first quote to the last receipt. Here is the flow for a call-out or a small installation.
| Step | What you do | What stays on record |
|---|---|---|
| Quote | Pick saved prices for labour and parts, then share the quote by WhatsApp link or email | The numbered quote and the date it went out |
| Client says yes | The client accepts the quote on their phone | The acceptance, so "I never agreed to that" doesn't come up |
| Job | The quote becomes a work order; the technician app records photos, time, materials and the client's signature | What was done, by whom, with which parts |
| Invoice | Turn the job into an invoice without retyping; once issued, it's locked | A numbered invoice nobody can quietly change |
| Paid | Record the deposit or full amount: Juice, cash, card, bank transfer or cheque | Each part payment against the right invoice |
| Proof | Envoice issues a numbered receipt | What was paid and what's still owed |
Say you agree to knock Rs 500 off after the job because the client bought their own mixer tap. You don't edit the invoice; you issue a credit note, and the balance corrects itself while the history stays visible. Payment reminders can go out on invoices that are still open, and a daily owner summary email keeps you up to date without opening the app.
Two honest limits are worth knowing. Envoice records payments; it doesn't collect them online, so your clients keep paying by Juice or transfer the way they do now. And WhatsApp sharing works by link: you tap send yourself.
If you have a helper or an apprentice, give them their own login with the technician role instead of your password.
What to look for in any invoicing software
Whatever you end up using, check these before you pay for it:
- Can a quote turn into an invoice without retyping? Every retype is a chance to lose a line item.
- Are issued invoices locked, with corrections made through credit notes? If anyone can edit a sent invoice, your record won't hold up when a client disputes the amount.
- Does it handle part payments, and does the receipt show the balance still owed?
- Does it know how people here pay: Juice, cash, cheque, bank transfer?
- Can the person on site use it on a phone, with photos and a signature?
- If your turnover is heading past Rs 3m, VAT registration becomes compulsory from 1 October 2026, so ask whether the software prepares the VAT worksheet. Envoice's VAT Manager prepares the monthly worksheet and the VT03 annex; you file on the MRA portal yourself.
One more question for any vendor: where do they stand on MRA e-invoicing? Envoice is registered as an e-invoicing provider, with the listing pending.
Getting started this week
- Start the trial and add your logo, BRN and, if you have one, your VAT number.
- Save the items you quote most: call-out fee, hourly labour, a standard tap replacement, a distribution board check.
- Send your next quote from Envoice instead of typing it into a chat.
- When the client accepts, turn it into a work order and let the technician app collect the photos and signature.
- Go through the notebook and enter every job that's still unpaid as an invoice, so the money owed sits in one list.
- Record each Juice payment against its invoice on the day it lands, then check who owes you on Friday afternoon.
Try it on your next call-out
